About Dartmouth College

Cole & Van Note is investigating Dartmouth College, an Ivy League school in New Hampshire. [1]

On November 24, 2025, Dartmouth College began reporting a data breach affecting thousands. As of this writing, there have been over 500 individuals impacted in California and 1494 individuals in Maine. This breached data included names, Social Security numbers, and financial account information. [2]

According to notices and local reporting, the incident stemmed from a zero‑day vulnerability in Oracle’s E‑Business Suite that allowed an unauthorized actor to access Dartmouth files between August 9 and August 12, 2025; Dartmouth offered one year of Experian IdentityWorks to those notified and implemented available Oracle patches following the incident. [3]

      How Data Breaches Occur

Data breaches happen in various ways. Here’s a general overview of common methods:

      • Phishing Attacks: Deceptive emails which trick authorized users into providing sensitive information like passwords to criminals.
      • Malware: Malicious software, such as viruses or ransomware, is used to infiltrate systems and steal or encrypt data.
      • Weak Passwords: Using easily guessable or outdated passwords make it easy for hackers to gain access.
      • Unpatched Vulnerabilities: Failing to update software can leave known security gaps that attackers can exploit.
      • Insider Threats: Employees or contractors with access to sensitive data may compromise security.
      • Social Engineering: Manipulating individuals into divulging confidential information.
      • Data/Device Theft: Physical theft of devices, such as laptops or external drives, which grant access.
