About Search Inc.

Cole & Van Note is investigating Search Inc., a non-profit company headquartered in Illinois. [1]

On November 26, 2025, Search Inc. began reporting a data breach that affected 2,484 individuals. This breached data included names, Social Security numbers, financial account information, driver’s licenses, medical information, and dates of birth. [2]

According to the organization’s official breach notification, Search Inc. detected unusual activity involving one of its email accounts on March 10, 2025, which was later determined to have been accessed without authorization. Upon discovery, Search Inc. secured the affected account and engaged a third-party cybersecurity firm to investigate. The breach may have involved the exposure of sensitive personal information contained within the compromised account, and the organization is notifying potentially affected individuals and offering support resources as appropriate. [3]

Considering the number of people impacted by this event, Cole & Van Note’s data breach attorneys are considering legal action on behalf of those affected. If you have received notice of this data security incident, we urge you to contact us so we can help you with your case.

      How Data Breaches Occur

Data breaches happen in various ways. Common methods include:

      • Phishing Attacks: Deceptive emails which trick authorized users into providing sensitive information like passwords to criminals.
      • Malware: Malicious software, such as viruses or ransomware, is used to infiltrate systems and steal or encrypt data.
      • Weak Passwords: Using easily guessable or outdated passwords make it easy for hackers to gain access.
      • Unpatched Vulnerabilities: Failing to update software can leave known security gaps that attackers can exploit.
      • Insider Threats: Employees or contractors with access to sensitive data may compromise security.
      • Social Engineering: Manipulating individuals into divulging confidential information.
      • Data/Device Theft: Physical theft of devices, such as laptops or external drives, which grant access.
